Spending time outdoors is a great way to destress and get some perspective about life – especially if you’re living and working in an urban jungle and have no opportunity for variety in your day to day activities. Being cooped up in a cubicle and moving through traffic between your home and your workplace can be a bit monotonous. Engaging in outdoor activity is the best way to make life a bit more dynamic.
Being outdoors has a lot of great benefits. Apart from the fresh air, the sun, and the wide spaces, it can be pretty meditative to spend time in nature. If you are traveling or engaging in these activities with friends or family, it is a great way to bond and spend quality time with them, and learn more about one another.
However, being outdoors does come with some risks. The normal comforts of home won’t be readily available to you, so make sure you have all the essentials to make your adventures enjoyable.
The following are some of the essentials for going outdoors:
Get a forecast on the weather.
Most of what you plan to bring or wear will be dependent on the activity you are going to do, and the weather conditions at the time of your escapade. Make sure you are updated on the weather forecast at your destination, so you know exactly what to pack, what to wear, and what gear you need to bring to protect yourself from the elements.
Are you going camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, or mountaineering? The specific activity will determine what you need to wear. Make sure you are wearing the appropriate clothing for what you’re going to do, and are well-protected from the elements.
Included in your garb should be the gear/equipment that will be helpful for your activities. Make sure you have everything available to you, especially for the more intense kinds of adventures.
Bring a first-aid kit.
You never know what could happen, and what unforeseen accidents or circumstances could arise. Make sure you have a first-aid kit with you in order to cover all the possibilities for injury or sickness. Also have the basics such as sunblock, insect repellant, and a sanitizer.
Also make sure you are properly hydrated and energized for your trip. Have enough water and food/snacks to keep you going for as long as you have to.
Be in good physical condition.
This may sound like it shouldn’t be part of this checklist but it is probably the most important thing you need to make sure you have when you go outdoors. You can’t foresee the physical demands that will be needed of you, and there may be a lot of strenuous activity. Make sure you are up for the challenge – that you are in good health and are physically strong enough to do all the walking or lifting of equipment, or any other basic movement or action that may be involved in your adventures.
These may be preliminary steps, but if you have them in place, you can rest assured that you have your bases covered and can proceed with your adventure in confidence.
