Best Trail Runners For Hiking

People all around the world can get easily bored from running on a treadmill or on the same street routes each and every day. Every now and then runners enjoy the challenge and change of scenery that trail running can bring. It certainly can add more of a challenge with some of the steep inclines and rocky terrain, but it leaves you feeling all the better after you have conquered the trail.

As with many things concerning shoes, runners have a lot of options in terms of what kind of trail running shoe they want. Frequent runners tend to know exactly what kind of shoe works best for them and which ones to avoid. It is even more important, when trail running, that runners find the ideal shoe to make the trek as comfortable as possible.

This guide will provide some ideas on some of the best trail running shoes available today. Each will identify some of the strengths and weaknesses that will help you make the right decision for all your trail running needs.

La Sportiva Bushido

As opposed to the Saucony Peregrine, this is the shoe you want on your feet if you enjoy running through the most rugged of terrains. If you didn’t already know, La Sportiva began as a climbing company, so the fact that they have made a hard core terrain running shoe is no surprise. The shoe is incredibly responsive, stable over difficult terrain, and grips well to never slow you down on your run. It is not heavily cushioned, so you will feel the terrain along your run, which may be beneficial for many people. Regardless, this shoe will provide you with the confidence you need to reach your destination.

As would be expected, this kind of shoe is stiffer than your normal trail running shoes. The shoe was built with the expectation in mind that runners would wear it for longer runs involving difficult terrain. This is not the shoe for you if you plan on consistently running on flat ground.

Saucony Peregrine ISO

When it comes to traction, weight, protection, and cushioning, the Peregrine checks off all the boxes. The part that stands out the most in terms of the strength of this shoe is the tread grips that dominate the underside of the shoe. On the unpredictable trail routes, runners want a shoe that can grasp rocks and handpacked dirt, which this shoe clearly does. An amazing lacing system is included in the shoe to give runners a more “sock-like” feel. And, you can’t go wrong with the sleek style that the shoe provides.
Runners who are looking for the most difficult terrain to run through should look towards a different shoe. This shoe is known more for its long-distance cushioning and its ability to be more flexible than stable. However, if you are not looking to run on the rockiest terrain, this is the ideal shoe for you. It provides just about everything a trail runner would ever need in their shoes.

Hoka One One Speedgoat

It would be very hard to miss a runner running in these shoes. They are extremely bright and truly do stand out in a crowd. These are max cushioned shoes with a thick midsole that is perfect for just about any type of trail. The shoe comes with a rockered sole with a foam that will give you the extra push you desire. It is packed with a strong lug pattern that really provides the hold most runners look for on all kinds of surfaces.

One thing runners should keep in mind with this shoe is that it struggles a bit with descending trails. It has a slight difficulty with holding ground, but not enough to sway you away from this shoe. Look no further than the Hoka if your main objective is hitting the pavement or your easy/somewhat difficult trails.

Salomon Speedcross

Salomon is a popular brand in the trail running market, so runners can be confident in the quality of shoe they would be running in. It comes with a single-pull lace system with a supportive fit that is sturdy but still reasonably light. Its massive lugs offer the perfect traction over some of the harshest weather conditions.

The Speedcross does come with a narrow fit, which may not be ideal for everyone. It also doesn’t provide as much stability over tough stretches of a trail that more adventurous runners may want. Because it sits higher than normal shoes, it can trick runners into thinking they could roll over on rock. But, when it comes to high-class traction, it would be hard to find a better shoe.
