Altra Superior 3.0 Review

Those on the hunt for the ultimate trail shoe understand that they aren’t having a tough time finding the perfect option because so few choices exist – but because there are so many different shoes to pick and choose from!

Combine that with the fact that every shoe company out there promises that they have the one true game changer on the market, and that their shoe is better than everyone else’s, and it’s easy to get more than a little bit overwhelmed trying to find the right one for your specific needs and your specific budget.

Recently, however, one particular pair of trail shoes have separated themselves from the rest of the pack pretty consistently. The Altra Superior 3.0 is lightweight, versatile, and low-profile – and it certainly doesn’t hurt that it’s available in both men’s and women’s versions, either.

To learn exactly what we think about the Altra Superior 3.0 let’s dive a little deeper into this quick review!

  • Lightweight
  • Versatile
  • Low-profile
  • Available for men and women

  • Heavier than previous versions

Initial Impressions

Right out of the box you are going to be very impressed with the overall quality of the shoe itself, the materials that it has been made out of, and the engineering and design that must’ve went on behind the scenes to make a shoe this comfortable and this high-performing.

Certainly one of the most versatile trail shoe options available on the market today, perfect for those that want something to hike in, something to run on trails in, and something to just kind of slip on when you are heading off the beaten path without having to chew up your traditional running shoes, the Altra Superior 3.0 is a mix between a cross training shoe, a basketball shoe, your favorite hiking boots, and a lightweight second skin.

The latest version of this shoe (the 3.0) features incredible stability without any extra weight being added. It comes in at just 8 ounces, and almost unbelievably lightweight for a shoe this strong and this durable – even when going over rough and rocky terrain.

There’s a lot of extra flexibility in the toe box that nestles nicely with the curvature of your foot but you’re also going to see quite a bit of sturdiness that helps to protect your foot with every step, guaranteeing that you are able to push yourself further and further off road without feeling it later in the day.

Proprietary Heel Claw design features have been implemented to protect both your heel bone and the soft skin around your Achilles, again helping you to feel a lot more comfortable when you’re spending plenty of time off of the pavement. There’s just enough wiggle room in the toe box to spread out and not feel tight and confined while you move, and you aren’t going to have to worry about a lot of blisters – even when the shoes are brand-new – because of this design feature.

Most importantly (especially for those that are going to be purchasing the Altra Superior 3.0 shoes online) these run true to fit and true to size. What you wear in your everyday shoes are going to fit perfectly when you get the same size in the Altra Superior 3.0 shoes, make no mistake about it.

The sticky and grippy rubber outsole has been designed to offer plenty of extra traction on slick and slippery surfaces (like wet rocks on the trail, for example) but also manages well in wet, sticky, and muddy situations.

Lightweight enough to be technically considered a “minimal shoe” but definitely sturdy enough to be put through its paces on almost any kind of terrain imaginable you are going to be blown away by just how comfortable this shoe is in almost every single situation.

The elastic material throughout keeps the shoe close to your foot and really helps it feel like a second skin. At the same time, the material is breathable and ultra lightweight so you don’t have to worry about a lot of sweat or a lot of moisture. You definitely don’t have to worry about a lot of odor, either.

Standout Features

The outsole is one of the real stars of the show with this particular pair of shoes.

It’s rubberized material gives you the kind of traction you just aren’t going to get with your more traditional hiking shoes, and you’re going to feel like Spider-Man himself on uneven terrain compared to running shoes or cross training shoes when you slip these on your feet.

The breathable upper of the shoe is a game changer as well, particularly for those that are going to be spending a lot of time off road in the hot summer sun. It’s nice to get a shoe that has breathable elastic material that isn’t going to cause your feet to sweat even more than they might have before, and it’s also nice to see a company really get the right amount of “stretch” and security to feel comfortable but remained stable.

The overall fit and finish of these shoes is absolutely off the charts and people that have slipped them on their feet definitely consider them to be a second skin. It’s easy to see why with a high quality materials that have been used throughout!

Some have complained about the width of these shoes right out of the box, at least before they have been sufficiently broken in with a couple of miles under their bouts. Once you start to work these shoes out on the trail or off the beaten path you’ll see that they relax just a little bit and become eminently more comfortable.

Others have complained that this shoe is slightly heavier than the 2.0 model, but really you likely will not notice as this shoe still comes in at 8 ounces.

Final Verdict

All things considered, you have to be at least a little bit crazy to sleep on everything that the Altra Superior 3.0 brings to the table.

This is one of the most impressive, versatile, and flexible off road/trail footwear options you are going to find anywhere on the market and it certainly beats hiking boots, running boots, or cross training boots that cannot go anywhere close to where this shoe can when you have it on your feet!
