There are times when even the most experienced hikers still find themselves in unexpected survival situations. To ensure that you will be able to make it through the worst, there are 10 important items for survival that you must never leave behind:

Matches or fire starter

All survival kits must always include a means for making fire. Whether it is for building a bonfire to keep you warm on a cold night, or to cook food or boil water, matches and fire starters can go a long way in ensuring your survival out in the wilderness.

Knife

No survival kit will ever be complete without a knife in it. A multi-purpose knife with tools can come in handy. You can use it to open bottles and cans, cut ropes, and other tasks which require a sharp tool.

Compass and Map

Paracord

You might be surprised how versatile and multipurpose paracords are that they are always a must-have in any survival kit. Whether it is for lashing or others, having at least 10 to 20 feet of it make perfect sense.

Flashlight and extra batteries

Nights in the great outdoors are completely different from what you are used to, and having flashlight and extra batteries can help you stay safe.

Food

Always a must for survival kits, food in the form of food bars can come in handy when your stomach starts to grumble.

Extra clothing

Even in the midst of summer, hypothermia could be a serious risk at night or during a cool rain when you don’t have proper clothing with you.

First aid kit

You probably think you will never need it, but a basic compact mini first aid kit is a great idea for you to survive even the simplest of injuries.

Mylar emergency blanket

This blanket can serve several uses such as keeping yourself warm, and having a potential shelter as it can be used a small tarp.

Stainless steel water container

Aside from being a good container for your water, this can also be used as a vessel for boiling water to ensure that it is safe to drink, especially when the water came from questionable sources.
